THE THIRD MAN: Classic Film Fest

King’s Theatre’s Classic Film Fest continues with THE THIRD MAN, the 1949 thriller starring Orson Wells

Pulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime—and thus begins this legendary tale of love, deception, and murder. Thanks to brilliant performances by Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles; Anton Karas’s evocative zither score; Graham Greene’s razor-sharp dialogue; and Robert Krasker’s dramatic use of light and shadow, The Third Man, directed by the inimitable Carol Reed, only grows in stature as the years pass.

After moving to a new town, troublemaking teen Jim Stark (James Dean) is supposed to have a clean slate, although being the new kid in town brings its own problems. While searching for some stability, Stark forms a bond with a disturbed classmate, Plato (Sal Mineo), and falls for local girl Judy (Natalie Wood). However, Judy is the girlfriend of neighborhood tough, Buzz (Corey Allen). When Buzz violently confronts Jim and challenges him to a drag race, the new kid’s real troubles begin.

CLEO FROM 5 TO 7: Classic Film Fest

King’s Theatre’s Classic Film Fest continues with Anges Varda’s 1962 CLEO from 5 to 7 (presented with English subtitles)

Agnès Varda eloquently captures Paris in the sixties with this real-time portrait of a singer (Corinne Marchand) set adrift in the city as she awaits test results of a biopsy. A chronicle of the minutes of one woman’s life, Cléo from 5 to 7 is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama, featuring a score by Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina.

UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG: Classic Film Fest

King’s Theatre’s Classic Film Fest continues with 1964 film THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG starring Catherine Deneuve (presented with English subtitles)

The angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve was launched to stardom by this dazzling musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop owner’s delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic, played by Nino Castelnuovo. When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through lilting songs by the great composer Michel Legrand, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time.

Despite polar opposite backgrounds Twin Flames found a common musical language. This captivating duo combines singer-songwriters Jaaji  (Inuk Mohawk from Nunavik) and Chelsey June  (Algonquin Cree métis) from Ottawa. Twin Flames takes the audience on a musical journey across Canada and the Arctic, they echo the voices of their ancestors and depict life on the land.

This husband-wife duo has now played over 800 shows in less four years with performances that have taken them across Canada, The Arctic, Greenland, France and The United States. What started as small flame has turned into a raging fire one that is staying lit in the hearts of fans and listeners.
