Karen Tomasino and Ryan Hebert in Never Give Up
The Annapolis District Drama Group (ADDG) is very excited to unveil six Stage-to-Screen short-plays!
Developed in conjunction with King’s Theatre, the six Ten Minute plays were carefully selected to allow rehearsal and performance while observing appropriate physical-distancing. Performed on-location at venues in and around town, including a local church, Fort Anne Cafe, Sissiboo Coffee shop, the Annapolis Royal Wharf, and the King’s stage, they were filmed and edited by professionally-experienced cinematographers and cutting room crew. With this project, ADDG has taken community theatre to a new level in Annapolis Royal, despite the current limitations brought by the Covid pandemic!
The plays originate from the pens of award-winning playwrights – as local as Granville Beach, to western Canada, the US, and as far-flung as Australia. The writers themselves have expressed an equal excitement to see their work translated into this new medium, and give their wholehearted blessing to the project!

Miriam Orlando & Meggie Pozzolo in Graceland
Each play was created with six very experienced local directors and casts that include many of the Drama Group’s finest actors — including outstanding youth actors. It’s a mix of comedy, pathos & intrigue all in good measure. They will make you laugh, make you cry and make you think; and best of all, they will entertain you.
All six ADDG-to-Screens will be shown each night. A Q&A with selected members of the team, hosted by Simon Bonnington, will follow.
Reserved seating. Come out and see your favourite actors on the Big Screen at King’s and support your local Theatre.

Director Phelim McDermott tackles another one of Philip Glass’s masterpieces, following the now-legendary Met staging of Satyagraha. Star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo is the title pharaoh, the revolutionary ruler who transformed ancient Egypt, with the striking mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges in her Met debut as his wife, Nefertiti. To match the opera’s hypnotic, ritualistic music, McDermott has created an arresting vision that includes a virtuosic company of acrobats and jugglers. Karen Kamensek conducts in her Met debut.
Please be aware that this production contains some full-frontal nudity, which may not be suitable for young audiences.

From the imaginations of Oscar nominees Armando Iannucci, director of TIFF 2017’s The Death of Stalin, and Simon Blackwell, who co-wrote Iannucci’s breakthrough feature In the Loop, comes this gloriously frenetic adaptation of one of Charles Dickens’ most beloved novels. Starring Oscar nominee Dev Patel and featuring an august supporting cast that includes Oscar winner Tilda Swinton and Golden Globe winners Hugh Laurie and Ben Wishaw, The Personal History of David Copperfield is gloriously entertaining, careening through 19th-century England as it tracks its hero’s zigzag destiny.
Born six months after the death of his father, David (Patel) is lucky to be raised by a loving mother. But when Mum weds the dour Edward Murdstone, David is shipped off to the cottage — actually a capsized boat — of his housekeeper’s family. These peculiar accommodations prove to be only the first of David’s numerous temporary abodes, which include an oppressive boarding school and the home of his eccentric aunt Betsey Trotwood (Swinton). Wherever David goes, whether living in poverty or comfort, he writes pithy impressions of all those he encounters — impressions that will one day constitute his autobiography.
With its refreshing casting and ceaseless visual surprises — walls literally fall away to make room for flashbacks — Iannucci and Blackwell’s David Copperfield transposes its source material into a decidedly 21st-century cinematic context. Yet the film never loses sight of its central ideas: that great art is born of great experience, and one’s true fortune can be measured in friends. – CAMERON BAILEY

ON STAGE LIVE AT KING’S THEATRE!
The tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe, this rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the way social conventions distort the most natural of human urges—our appetites. Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture both high and low, the sweet, sexy, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever made.
