THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS
Oct 30 @ 7:30 pm

In Tim Wardle’s Sundance Special Jury Prize– winning documentary, a chance encounter brings three identical triplets together nearly two decades after they were separated at birth and adopted by separate families. However, their elation at their reunion is soon undermined by the realities of fame, family, and a creeping suspicion that something sinister tore them from one other in the first place. Robert Shafran arrives at college ready to reinvent himself, but when strangers continue to refer to him as “Eddy,” their welcomes quickly become unnerving. Robert soon finds himself face-to-face with his exact double: Eddy Galland. The pair’s astonishment at finding each other and the incredible story of their past and chance meeting is quickly picked up by local media, catching the attention of David Kellman, their identical triplet. With the three brothers happily reunited and busy taking full advantage of their newfound celebrity, their parents take up the less pleasant task of investigating what separated the three young men in the first place. When their questions are met with evasive and unsatisfactory responses from the triplets’ adoption agency, a larger conspiracy bubbles to the surface, with an indeterminate number of victims at play. A film of triumph and tragedy, and a true testament to the power of documentary film, Wardle’s Three Identical Strangers leads its audience through an emotional journey about how we understand our families and ourselves.

  • UK, 2018
  • English
  • 96 minutes
  • Director: Tim Wardle
  • With: Robert Shafran, David Kellman, Eddy Galland

“A gripping, stranger-than-fiction account of a real-world medical conspiracy, the film begins as a human-interest story and builds to an impressive work of investigative journalism into how and why they were placed with the families who raised them.”  Variety

FAHRENHEIT 11/9
Nov 2 @ 7:30 pm

Palme d’Or–winning documentarian Michael Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11) turns his attention to another significant date, examining the legacy of Trump’s ascension to the US presidency on November 9, 2016.

In July 2016, Michael Moore was treated like a crackpot doomsayer for writing the essay “5 Reasons Why Trump Will Win.” His prediction was the opposite of most pollsters and pundits but it came true in the wee hours of November 9, 2016 when the electoral college votes were tallied.

Now Moore brings his sharp satire to analyze the legacy of 11/9 and to raise questions about what lies ahead. Trump is a master distractor with his incendiary tweets, staff firings, and outright lies. But within the chaos, his administration has delivered on a right-wing agenda with tax cuts for the wealthy, environmental deregulation, court appointments, and treaty withdrawals that will be felt long into the future.

Director: Michael Moore

“If you’ve grown desensitized to how profoundly Donald Trump has changed everything, it’ll wake you right back up.”

LYNNEA ROSE & THE MODERN GRASS
Nov 3 @ 7:30 pm

LYNNEA ROSE is charming her way into the hearts of folk, Celtic and country fans alike. Since the release of her debut album “Lynnea Rose” in 2013, she has graced audiences all across Canada, sharing with them her beautiful voice, heartfelt songwriting and genuine stage presence. Born and raised in Granville Beach,  Nova Scotia as an eighth generation Armstrong,  it’s easy to hear where her musical inspirations lie. Her deep connection to her Celtic heritage and East Coast is clearly evident in songs like “Fundy Shore”,  “Where I am From” and “Bad Winter”. Stylistically, Lynnea Rose has been compared to Alison Krauss and The Rankins, with her song-writing remeniscent of  Sarah Harmer and Gillian Welch.

In 2015, Lynnea Rose teamed up with award winning producers Tom Terrell (Modern Grass) and Karl Falkenham (CBC) to record her sophomore album “Rocking Chair”, which received a 2017 Music Nova Scotia Award nomination for “Americana Recording of the Year”. In June 2018,  Lynnea released a music video for “Bad Winter” which inspired an official line dance created by Trans World Dance. Both the official music video and instructional video for the line dance can be found on YouTube.
Recently returning from her very first Home Routes Tour, a series of 11 house concerts across Northern Alberta and British Columbia, Lynnea Rose is pleased to be performing back in her home town along side the incredibly talented blue grass supergroup “The Modern Grass”.

Nearly 4 years after the release of ‘City Ghosts’, THE MODERN GRASS are back on the scene with their fourth studio album, ‘Payday’. Produced by award winning duo Tom Terrell and Karl Falkenham, Payday is an homage to the simplicity and modesty of traditional music and living, Modern Grass style. This colorful and polarized collection of original and traditional songs taps into the rich vein of North American roots music, songwriting and musicianship. Payday features a special cast of guest musicians, curated not only for their sounds but for their critical places in the lineage of roots music.

Payday, as per usual for the MG, is paradoxical. Featuring Terrell’s clever and down home songwriting as well as unique renditions and twisted interpretations of folk, country, gospel, blues and old time classics. While the genre seemingly remains in flux, the MG paints a coherent, vibrant picture that is everything we’ve come to expect from the grass, and more. The latest incarnation of the Modern Grass features original members Tom Terrell, Andrew Sneddon & Adam Pye and debuts the fine banjo picking of Nova Scotia native, Ryan Dillman. With musical guests Brittany Haas, Joe Walsh, John Reischman, Donald Maclennan & Ray Legere.

Accolades
  • 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards Producer of the Year (Tom Terrell & Karl Falkenham for City Ghosts)
  • 2014 Music Nova Scotia Bluegrass/Americana Album of the Year – City Ghosts

WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOUR?
Nov 9 @ 7:30 pm

An exploration of the life, lessons, and legacy of iconic children’s television host, Fred Rogers. The sleeper hit of the season is a likely documentary Oscar contender and has been called one of the best documentaries ever made.

One movie you want to experience in a theater full of strangers is “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, Morgan Neville’s documentary about the late, great PBS children’s show host Fred Rogers. As people spread the word, this Focus Features movie about the benevolent piano-playing puppeteer host of “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood” (1968-2001), a show for children about how to build a neighborhood and live together in society, follows sleeper Ruth Bader Ginsberg biodoc “RBG” as a movie that shows us what a hero looks like.

COLETTE
Nov 20 @ 7:30 pm

Based on the life of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, the film follows the writer through her marriage to Henry Gauthier-Villars, who whisks her away from her quiet and humble life in the countryside to live in the bustling and lively Paris. Henry, better known as “Willy,” is a successful Parisian writer who, while relying on an army of ghostwriters to produce his work, uses his time to engage in other self-indulgent activities — including numerous affairs with other women. He soon enlists his wife as one of his ghostwriters. He initially dismisses her contributions, but soon decides to re-work and publish Colette’s writing under his own name in order to save their family from financial ruin. Throughout their tumultuous marriage, Colette remains honest, consulting with Willy about her confusion over her newly discovered attraction to other women. While she seeks permission for her explorations, Willy does not offer the same courtesy, consistently betraying Colette’s trust and continuing to exploit her talents in order to publish her wildly successful work as his own. As their marriage begins to deteriorate, Colette finds a place for herself within her writing and begins to explore her creativity through a variety of artistic avenues. Keira Knightley quietly simmers as Colette, a trailblazing figure committed to breaking through stereotypes and conventions.

The life of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette makes for fascinating drama in a nuanced and inspiring film with a luminous central performance.”
