Conviction is a new documentary by the celebrated local filmmaker Nance Ackerman, Ariella Pahlke and Teresa MacInnes. Nance will be present to say a few words and answer questions. We will open with the 3-minute animated short Little Thunder, made by Nance Ackerman and Alan Syliboy.
Conviction envisions alternatives to prison through the eyes of women behind bars and those fighting on the front lines of the decarceration movement.
Conviction flips the narrative away from pop culture’s voyeuristic lens and hands it to the women who are being victimized, marginalized and criminalized in our society. Not another ‘broken prison’ film, Conviction is a ‘broken society’ film – an ambitious and inspired re-build of our community, from the inside out. With more women in prisons than ever before, the film implicates viewers to question the status quo, and to consider a different kind of society that better supports the most vulnerable among us.

THE GREAT BUSTER celebrates the life and career of one of the most influential and celebrated filmmakers and comedians, Buster Keaton, whose singular style and fertile output during the silent era created his legacy as a true cinematic visionary. Filled with stunningly restored archival Keaton films, Directed by Peter Bogdanovich.
Keaton’s beginnings on the vaudeville circuit are chronicled, as is the development of his trademark physical comedy and deadpan expression that earned him the lifelong moniker of “The Great Stone Face”, all of which led to his career-high years as the director, writer, producer and star of his own short films and features. Interspersed throughout are interviews with nearly two-dozen collaborators, filmmakers,performers andfriends, including Mel Brooks, Quentin Tarantino, Werner Herzog, Dick van Dyke and Johnny Knoxville, who discuss Keaton’s influence on modern comedy and cinema itself. The loss of artistic independence and career decline that marked his later years are also covered by Bogdanovich, before he casts a close eye on Keaton’s extraordinary output from 1923 to 1929, which yielded 10 remarkable feature films (including 1926’s The General and 1928’s Steamboat Bill, Jr.) that immortalized him as one of the greatest actor-filmmakers in the history of cinema.

Marilyn Lawson (1942-2018) was a great friend of the Theatre who died a year ago. Many will remember when she and Hannelore Fisher concocted the `Just Desserts` fundraiser that saved the day when the Theatre was in dire straights. The event showcased Marilyn`s extraordinary talents as a world-class chocolatier and pastry chef.
The Film: The Danish/French Babette’s Feast is based on a story by Isak Dinesen, also the source of the very different Out of Africa (1985). Stephane Audran plays Babette, a 19th century Parisian political refugee who seeks shelter in a rough Danish coastal town. Philippa (Bodil Kjer) and Martina (Birgitte Federspiel), the elderly daughters of the town’s long-dead minister, take Babette in. As revealed in flashback, Philippa and Martina were once beautiful young women (played by Hanne Stensgaard and Vibeke Hastrup), who’d forsaken their chances at romance and fame, taking hollow refuge in religion. Babette holds a secret that may very well allow the older ladies to have a second chance at life. This is one of the great movies about food, but there are way too many surprises in Babette’s Feast to allow us to reveal anything else at this point (except that Ingmar Bergman “regulars” Bibi Andersson and Jarl Kulle have significant cameo roles).. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
From the director whose films rank amongst the highest grossingin South Korea comes a black family comedy (of sorts) about a wealthy Korean family in a modern-day Downton Abbey upstairs-downstairs situation.Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 Palme d’Or winner tells the story of two families: the Kims and the Parks. The Kims are an impoverished family living in squalor, but they are resourceful. When opportunity strikes, they seize it — and never let go.
After a family friend decides to move to the United States, he encourages Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik, Okja) to replace him as a tutor to the daughter of the wealthy Park family. Ki-woo is unqualified for the job,but forges the credentials he needs with the help of his sister Ki-jung(Park So-dam).
One by one, each member of the Kim family finds their way into servitude to the Parks — without the Parks discovering who they really are. “Rich people are naive,” remarks the patriarch of the Kim family. The Parks are the source of survival for the Kims now. There is only one family member left to onboard: Kim matriarch Chung-Sook (Chang Hyae-jin).
The film travels through genres seamlessly to tell a story about greed and social disparity that is tragic (or maybe comedic) on a Shakespearean scale.

An intimate portrait and exploration of the career, music and influence of legendary Canadian musical icon, Gordon Lightfoot. With unprecedented access to the artist, the film takes audiences from high school auditoriums in straight-laced, small town Ontario in the 50s to the coffee houses of Yorkville and Greenwich Village in the 60s, through Lightfoot’s turbulent, substance-fueled arena shows of the 70s, and finally to the artist in present day. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Barbra Streisand are only a handful of the stars whose recordings of “Early Morning Rain” and other hits helped Lightfoot’s artistry leap across borders, but no matter how far his music travelled, he continued to write passionately about the country he called home. As fellow music icon Burton Cummings sums it up, “Gordon’s stuff screamed Canada.” The documentary features interviews from many notable voices in the music industry including Lightfoot peers Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Randy Bachman, and Steve Earle; famous fans Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee from Rush, Anne Murray and Sarah McLachlan; as well as behind the scenes stories from members of his longtime band.

Auditions for the Annapolis District Drama Group Spring 2020 production of “The Ladykillers” will be held at Kings Theatre on Wednesday 18th December at 6.30pm.
Directed by Simon Bonnington, the play is to be performed at King’s Theatre – performances will be Friday 27th, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March 2020. Rehearsals are scheduled to be Saturday morning 10am and Wednesday evenings, commencing in the first week of January.
Professor Marcus and his gang of dastardly (but inept) ne’er-do-wells are planning a security van heist. They select for their hide-out the upstairs bedroom of an eccentric but sweet little old lady. As a cover for their criminal plotting, the gang masquerade as an amateur string quintet using the room for rehearsal space.The elderly widow discovers their subterfuge – and the gang realise that she must be silenced. But none of them are prepared to do the deed…
This is a superb and hilarious stage adaptation of the classic Ealing Studios ‘dark comedy’ crime film (1955), which starred Alec Guiness, Herbert Lom and Peter Sellers
