Latin/rock guitar virtuoso and composer Roland Grant (formerly Roland Smith) is excited to bring his explosive brand of world music to the world. Hailing from Hants County, his music reflects his passion for genre-bending Latin-infused melodies tinged with rock and classical influences. His shows feature a mix of instrumentals and guest vocals that rock the house and leave audiences wowed.

Roland’s fingers effortlessly slide up and down the guitar, creating a fast-paced rhythm that makes the listener want to get up and dance.

Roland’s debut album Equilibrium (2018) is best described as “nuevo flamenco meets Steve Vai meets John Williams”. As an orchestral composer, Roland’s Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra premiered in 2019 with the composer as soloist. Other premieres include works for symphony orchestra, chamber music, and accompaniments to ballet and film. Roland was awarded the prize for Best Tonal Music at the 2017 International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition held in Prague, Czech Republic, of which he has been a two-time finalist. 

Roland is officially endorsed by Godin Guitars, a Canadian company that serves such artists as Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd), Myles Goodwyn (of April Wine) and Steve Stevens (of Billy Idol).

Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy living with his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). Elliott often seems lonely and out of sorts, lost in his own world. One day, while looking for something in the back yard, he senses something mysterious in the woods watching him. And he’s right: an alien spacecraft on a scientific mission mistakenly left behind an aging botanist who isn’t sure how to get home. Eventually Elliott puts his fears aside and makes contact with the “little squashy guy,” perhaps the least threatening alien invader ever to hit a movie screen. As Elliott tries to keep the alien under wraps and help him figure out a way to get home, he discovers that the creature can communicate with him telepathically. Comedy-drama Made in Italy is a heart-warming father son story set in glorious Tuscany about bohemian London artist Robert (Neeson), who returns to Italy with his estranged son Jack (Richardson) to make a quick sale of the house they inherited from his late wife. Neither expects to find the once beautiful villa in such a state of disrepair…

Renovations go badly, with father and son soon finding themselves at odds. Robert’s comical lack of DIY experience leads him to seek help from some colourful locals including the no nonsense Kate (Duncan), an ex-pat making her living selling villas who quickly captures his attention. For Jack, the state of the house seems to mirror his search for memories of happier times with his mother. He soon falls for Natalia (Bilello), a vivacious young Italian chef, who restores both body and soul with delights from her local trattoria – until the pair find their developing relationship in jeopardy from Natalia’s jealous and threatening ex-husband. As Robert and Jack painstakingly restore the villa to its previous glory, they also start to mend their relationship. The future may now look quite different and surprise them both.

FODAR moves performances outside for the first time with Market Dances!

Dancers will perform a collection of solos and duets – five works in all – choreographed especially for the Festival.

Each season FODAR also remounts a landmark production from Canada’s rich modern dance legacy. This year, the festival runs from August 19th through 22nd.

Madison Violet is a Juno-nominated Canadian music duo composed of Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac. The duo has achieved an impressive list of accolades throughout their 20 year career including a Juno nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Vocal Group Album of the Year and a Critic’s Choice Award from Country Music People’s Magazine. Their songs have been featured in the notorious music magazine MOJO’s Top 10 Playlist, and received a mass of acclaim from outlets such as the BBC, the CBC, Maverick Magazine and NPR, and have earned the duo the Grand Prize in the Maxell John Lennon Song Writing Contest. Madison Violet were on Germany’s WDR’s list of ‘Best Bands of All Time’ and with a bit of a departure from their rootsy sound, their single ‘These Ships’ was released in 2014 on one of the largest dance labels in the U.S., Ultra Records, garnering over 1,200,000 plays on Spotify. Multi-Award Winning Twin Flames push the boundaries of “Contemporary Folk”, with Indigenous, Inuit influenced songs that incorporate both Western and traditional instruments. Songs are written in Inuttitut, English and French. Audiences love discovering Twin Flames cultures, harmonies and powerful songwriting. A musical journey which transcends cultural boundaries and inspires unity.

Despite polar opposite backgrounds Twin Flames found a common musical language. This captivating duo combines singer-songwriters Jaaji  (Inuk Mohawk from Nunavik) and Chelsey June  (Algonquin Cree métis) from Ottawa. Twin Flames takes the audience on a musical journey across Canada and the Arctic, they echo the voices of their ancestors and depict life on the land.

This husband-wife duo has now played over 800 shows in less four years with performances that have taken them across Canada, The Arctic, Greenland, France and The United States. What started as small flame has turned into a raging fire one that is staying lit in the hearts of fans and listeners.

Three of Canada’s finest singer-songwriters together in one gorgeous show. You will laugh, cry and be transported by folk music at its best.

LYNN MILES is one of Canada’s most accomplished singer/songwriters. With twelve albums to her credit, the winner of multiple Canadian Folk Music awards (2011 English Songwriter of the Year), and a 2003 Juno award for Roots and Traditional Solo Album of the Year, she has certainly found her strength over time. Through a career that has seen her move from Ottawa to Los Angeles and back again, with stops in Nashville and Austin TX., and a healthy touring schedule that regularly takes her through the US, Europe and across Canada, she has always created and performed music with unbridled feeling and vulnerability. Lynn’s song “Three Chords and the Truth” was recently chosen as the closing song on the popular BBC TV series “Case Histories”, and her new release “Downpour” has been receiving glowing reviews.

SUSAN CROWE is often described as a “writer’s writer”, and is one of Canada’s most respected singer songwriters in the folk genre. At once complex, challenging and accessible, Susan’s intelligent and moving songs have captivated audiences and reviewers from coast to coast, continent to continent. She possesses, in the words of Britain’s Folk Roots magazine, “that rare ability of crafting a lyric that bears scrutiny on its own terms.” That rare ability has earned her two Juno nominations, and nominations from both the West Coast and East Coast Music Awards. No stranger to King’s Theatre, we are THRILLED to have Susan back with THE MAVENS.

SHARI ULRICH: For over four decades, accomplished singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Shari Ulrich has been winning hearts across North America with her voice, songs and on-stage charisma. A two-time JUNO-winner among other awards, she has recorded 25 albums as a solo artist and with the legendary Pied Pumkin, The Hometown Band, UHF, BTU and The High Bar Gang.

After 18 albums, countless awards and wowing sold‐out audiences around the globe, THE LEGENDARY DOWNCHILD BLUES BAND are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year with a brand‐new show featuring hits like “Flip, Flop & Fly,” as well as fan favourites and hidden gems from throughout their illustrious career.

Downchild came to international prominence as the inspiration for Hollywood stars Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi’s hit film, The Blues Brothers. In fact, two Downchild songs, “Shotgun Blues” and “(I Got Everything I Need) Almost” were even covered on The Blues Brothers’ 1978 multi‐platinum album Briefcase Full of Blues.

The band is lead by founder, Donnie “Mr. Downchild” Walsh on guitar and harmonica, singer Chuck Jackson, who also plays harmonica, tenor sax man Pat Carey, Michael Fonfara (who was a member of the early American rock supergroup Rhinoceros and Lou Reed’s band) plays keyboards, Gary Kendall on bass and drummer Mike Fitzpatrick.

With their signature jump‐blues style and infectious, soulful sound, Juno Award winners Downchild deliver a live performance that is second to none, and this special
anniversary show is one ‐ not to be missed!
