ROLAND GRANT
Aug 1 @ 7:00 pm

SOLD OUT!!  Please call the Box Office to get on the waiting list.

Official sponsor:

Explosive Latin/rumba flamenco guitar with a rock edge.

Think Santana, only faster.

Latin/rock guitar virtuoso and composer Roland Grant (formerly Roland Smith) is excited to bring his explosive brand of world music to the world. Hailing from Hants County, his music reflects his passion for genre-bending Latin-infused melodies tinged with rock and classical influences. His shows feature a mix of instrumentals and guest vocals that rock the house and leave audiences wowed.

Roland’s fingers effortlessly slide up and down the guitar, creating a fast-paced rhythm that makes the listener want to get up and dance.

Roland’s debut album Equilibrium (2018) is best described as “nuevo flamenco meets Steve Vai meets John Williams”. As an orchestral composer, Roland’s Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra premiered in 2019 with the composer as soloist. Other premieres include works for symphony orchestra, chamber music, and accompaniments to ballet and film. Roland was awarded the prize for Best Tonal Music at the 2017 International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition held in Prague, Czech Republic, of which he has been a two-time finalist.

Roland is officially endorsed by Godin Guitars, a Canadian company that serves such artists as Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd), Myles Goodwyn (of April Wine) and Steve Stevens (of Billy Idol).

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Aug 9 @ 2:00 pm

Watch one of the most beloved movies of all time on the big screen!!

Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy living with his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). Elliott often seems lonely and out of sorts, lost in his own world. One day, while looking for something in the back yard, he senses something mysterious in the woods watching him. And he’s right: an alien spacecraft on a scientific mission mistakenly left behind an aging botanist who isn’t sure how to get home. Eventually Elliott puts his fears aside and makes contact with the “little squashy guy,” perhaps the least threatening alien invader ever to hit a movie screen. As Elliott tries to keep the alien under wraps and help him figure out a way to get home, he discovers that the creature can communicate with him telepathically. Soon they begin to learn from each other, and Elliott becomes braver and less threatened by life. E.T. rigs up a communication device from junk he finds around the house, but no one knows if he’ll be rescued before a group of government scientists gets hold of him. In 2002, Steven Spielberg re-released E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in a revised edition, with several deleted scenes restored and digitally refurbished special effects. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

MADE IN ITALY
Aug 12 @ 7:00 pm

Comedy-drama Made in Italy is a heart-warming father son story set in glorious Tuscany about bohemian London artist Robert (Neeson), who returns to Italy with his estranged son Jack (Richardson) to make a quick sale of the house they inherited from his late wife. Neither expects to find the once beautiful villa in such a state of disrepair…

Renovations go badly, with father and son soon finding themselves at odds. Robert’s comical lack of DIY experience leads him to seek help from some colourful locals including the no nonsense Kate (Duncan), an ex-pat making her living selling villas who quickly captures his attention. For Jack, the state of the house seems to mirror his search for memories of happier times with his mother. He soon falls for Natalia (Bilello), a vivacious young Italian chef, who restores both body and soul with delights from her local trattoria – until the pair find their developing relationship in jeopardy from Natalia’s jealous and threatening ex-husband. As Robert and Jack painstakingly restore the villa to its previous glory, they also start to mend their relationship. The future may now look quite different and surprise them both.

FODAR: Dance on Film – CARMEN
Aug 19 @ 7:30 pm

Carlos Saura’s film Carmen was an international box office hit in 1983.

Choreographed by the legendary Antonio Gades to the music of Bizet, the film interweaves dance rehearsals with romantic encounters, characters’ fights with choreographed rumbles, and a comical patchwork of  ‘March of the Toreadors’. Gades plays a burgeoning choreographer searching for a dancer to take on the role of Carmen and then falls in love with his choice. As the film develops, the flamenco dancers become indistinct from their roles. The result is mayhem and magic.

Home to the only summer contemporary dance festival in Nova Scotia, Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal FODAR is ranked as one of the major dance festivals in the country. Back for its Sixth Season, the festival showcases the best and the current in contemporary dance performed by some of this country’s most celebrated dancers. Each season FODAR also remounts a landmark production from Canada’s rich modern dance legacy. This year, the festival runs from August 19th through 22nd.

  • Rated R for moderate nudity
  • Director: Carlos Saura
  • Starring: Regina Resnik (Carmen), Mario Del Monaco (Don José), and Tom Krause (Escamillo)

THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD
Oct 2 @ 7:30 pm
Director Armando Iannucci (The Death of Stalin) brings his sardonic wit — and a stellar cast that includes Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Capaldi, and Ben Whishaw — to Charles Dickens’ classic autobiographical novel.

From the imaginations of Oscar nominees Armando Iannucci, director of TIFF 2017’s The Death of Stalin, and Simon Blackwell, who co-wrote Iannucci’s breakthrough feature In the Loop, comes this gloriously frenetic adaptation of one of Charles Dickens’ most beloved novels. Starring Oscar nominee Dev Patel and featuring an august supporting cast that includes Oscar winner Tilda Swinton and Golden Globe winners Hugh Laurie and Ben Wishaw, The Personal History of David Copperfield is gloriously entertaining, careening through 19th-century England as it tracks its hero’s zigzag destiny.

Born six months after the death of his father, David (Patel) is lucky to be raised by a loving mother. But when Mum weds the dour Edward Murdstone, David is shipped off to the cottage — actually a capsized boat — of his housekeeper’s family. These peculiar accommodations prove to be only the first of David’s numerous temporary abodes, which include an oppressive boarding school and the home of his eccentric aunt Betsey Trotwood (Swinton). Wherever David goes, whether living in poverty or comfort, he writes pithy impressions of all those he encounters — impressions that will one day constitute his autobiography.

With its refreshing casting and ceaseless visual surprises — walls literally fall away to make room for flashbacks — Iannucci and Blackwell’s David Copperfield transposes its source material into a decidedly 21st-century cinematic context. Yet the film never loses sight of its central ideas: that great art is born of great experience, and one’s true fortune can be measured in friends. – CAMERON BAILEY

TAMPOPO
Oct 16 @ 7:30 pm

The tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe, this rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the way social conventions distort the most natural of human urges—our appetites. Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture both high and low, the sweet, sexy, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever made.

It is up to the groom’s flesh-and-blood fiancée, who has been pining for the arrival of her intended, to face her wraith-like rival and make peace with her by promising to live her dreams for her and by vowing to remember her always. Only then are the living bride and groom free to proceed with their own wedding ceremony in the warmhearted fable Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.

AMMONITE
Nov 20 @ 7:30 pm
Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan star in this raw love story between a solitary paleontologist and a wealthy, grieving wife in 19th-century Dorset.

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan have both shown exceptional range, depth, and intensity on screen, but Ammonite reveals new colours. In this story of a visionary scientist and the young woman who changes her life, these two stars deliver performances of raw electricity.

Mary Anning (Winslet) devotes her days on Southwest England’s Dorset coast to finding and cataloguing fossils of ammonites, extinct and beautiful sea creatures. In the early 19th century this is no work for a woman, and no scientific society will have her. So Mary toils alone, even as male scientists visit to study and take credit for her work. When one visitor brings along his grieving wife, Charlotte (Ronan), then abandons her there to return to London, the two women have no one to turn to but each other.

Francis Lee’s follow-up to his award-winning God’s Own Country shows the same talent for powerful love stories in harsh environments. The rocky, windswept seaside of Lyme Regis is palpable here. Lee directs with a similar brisk urgency, cutting to the core of Mary’s anger and Charlotte’s pain, charting the gathering emotional storm that throws them together. As in God’s Own Country, Lee films physical passion without a shred of prudishness. He, Winslet, and Ronan forego period gloss for a portrait of desire that feels so much more true. And in showing the full gamut of Mary’s astringent brilliance and unvarnished lust, Winslet delivers one of the very best performances of her career.  –  CAMERON BAILEY

FREE KID’S MOVIE  — All Welcome!
Santa will be present.
Late on Christmas Eve, after the town has gone to sleep, a boy boards the mysterious train that waits for him–The Polar Express. When the boy arrives at the North Pole, Santa Claus offers him any gift he desires. The boy asks only for a bell from the harness of Santa’s reindeer. But on the way home, the bell is lost. Christmas morning, the boy finds the bell under the Christmas tree, and when he shakes it, the bell makes the most beautiful sound he’s ever heard. His mother admires the bell, but she laments that it is broken … for, you see, only a true believer can hear the sound of the bell.

THE NUTCRACKER - National Ballet of Canada

The National Ballet of Canada’s The Nutcracker is a magical holiday tradition. Set in the rustic world of rural 19th-century Russia, The Nutcracker blends an affectionately detailed natural setting with an extravagant dreamscape of wonders, from the glittering, ice-coated world of the Snow Queen to the awe-inspiring splendour of the golden palace of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The December 13 matinee performance runs 115 minutes, with a 20 minute intermission. The Nutcracker’s choreography and libretto are by James Kudelka, music is by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikosky, set and costume design are by Santo Loquasto and lighting design is by Jennifer Tipton.

“I am extremely proud to be able to share our production of The Nutcracker with Canadians nationwide. And this year, we will expand our reach even more, bringing this great holiday tradition to a greater number of communities across the country,” says Karen Kain, Artistic Director. “We are excited to once again present The Nutcracker to our theatre audiences across the country,” says Pat Marshall, Vice President, Communications and Investor Relations, Cineplex Entertainment. “The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition that should be experienced by as many people as possible and we have expanded the number of theatres to ensure everyone can enjoy it.”

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

A joint “stage to screen” production of the Annapolis District Drama Group and Young Company Productions, filmed on location in Annapolis Royal. Directed by Simon Bonnington.

Following the widely-acclaimed success this summer of their first ever Stage-to-Screen production, the Annapolis District Drama Group is joining forces with Young Company Productions to create a family-favourite Christimas-time spectacle that is certain to entertain: a screen-play version of “A Christmas Carol”, by Charles Dickens. – pandemic-willing, to be screened at King’s Theatre the weekend before Christmas!

With a cast numbering 55 this is probably the largest theatrical production ever in Annapolis Royal, and that in a time of constraint due to pandemic restrictions. However, this well-loved tale lends itself quite easily to performance in line with current Provincial guidelines. The screen-play is a newly-crafted adaptation by Simon Bonnington, straight from Dickens original text, with Covid very much in mind, and gives the opportunity for several small groups of actors to rehearse and perform the different scenes quite separately from each other.

Inspired by their recent experience of on-location filming, “A Christmas Carol” is being rehearsed and filmed in and around several of the historic buildings in our communities. The O’Dell House Museum & the Sinclair Inn Museum are being made available by the kind cooperation of the Annapolis Heritage Society; and likewise the Board of the Tupperville School Museum are enthusiastically welcoming, allowing the actors to immerse themselves in these genuine Victorian settings!

The Queen Anne Inn, the Carlisle House Inn, and the Historic Gardens, as well as other well-known buildings and establishments, are also playing host to the production.

Screenings are scheduled for December (Thursday 17th 7.00pm,) Friday 18th 7.00pm, Saturday 19th 7.00pm & Sunday 20th 2pm

In this moving modern love story, Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci star as a couple revisiting England’s Lake District after a devastating diagnosis.

“Tucci and Firth have never been better than they are here” –Michael O’Sullivan, The Washington Post

In this modern love story, Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci star as a couple struggling with a diagnosis of early-onset dementia. Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Tucci) have been together 20 years, and are driving through England’s Lake District in their old camper van reconnecting with friends, family, and old haunts in the wake of Tusker’s life-changing illness. Sam has placed his life on hold in order to act as his partner’s full-time caregiver, and the men’s time together has become especially sacred. Their trip is a last opportunity to travel while Tusker is still able — but secrets are revealed, plans unravel, and their love is tested like never before.

Writer-director Harry Macqueen (Hinterland) directs Supernova with “consistent care … [and] here that care pays off to devastating effect” (Glenn Kenny, The New York Times).
