Miriam Orlando & Meggie Pozzolo in Graceland

The Annapolis District Drama Group (ADDG) is very excited to unveil six Stage-to-Screen short plays

Developed in conjunction with King’s Theatre, the six Ten Minute plays were carefully selected to allow rehearsal and performance while observing appropriate physical-distancing. Performed on-location at venues in and around town, including a local church, Fort Anne Cafe, Sissiboo Coffee shop, the Annapolis Royal Wharf, and the King’s stage, they were filmed and edited by professionally-experienced cinematographers and cutting room crew. With this project, ADDG has taken community theatre to a new level in Annapolis Royal, despite the current limitations brought by the Covid pandemic!

The plays originate from the pens of award-winning playwrights – as local as Granville Beach, to western Canada, the US, and as far-flung as Australia. The writers themselves have expressed an equal excitement to see their work translated into this new medium, and give their wholehearted blessing to the project!

Abigail Bonnington and Gordon Keel in The Pool of Cerebus

Each play was created with six very experienced local directors and casts that include many of the Drama Group’s finest actors — including outstanding youth actors. It’s a mix of comedy, pathos & intrigue all in good measure. They will make you laugh, make you cry and make you think; and best of all, they will entertain you.

All six ADDG-to-Screens will be shown each night. A Q&A with selected members of the team, hosted by Simon Bonnington, will follow.

Reserved seating. Come out and see your favourite actors on the Big Screen at King’s and support your local Theatre.

TICKETS for the RED CARPET PREMIERE (actors, directors and crew will be present):

ALL MY SONS - National Theatre

Captured live in 2019 from The Old Vic in London, Academy Award-winner Sally Field (Steel Magnolias, Brothers & Sisters) and Bill Pullman (The Sinner, Independence Day) star in Arthur Miller’s blistering drama All My Sons.

America, 1947. Despite hard choices and even harder knocks, Joe and Kate Keller are a success story. They have built a home, raised two sons and established a thriving business.

But nothing lasts forever and their contented lives, already shadowed by the loss of their eldest boy to war, are about to shatter. With the return of a figure from the past, long buried truths are forced to the surface and the price of their American dream is laid bare.

Jeremy Herrin (NT Live: This House, People, Places & Things) directs a cast including Jenna Coleman (Victoria), and Colin Morgan (Merlin).

All My Sons is an Old Vic co-production with Headlong. Headlong makes exhilarating theatre for audiences across the UK. A touring company with a big imagination, we interrogate the contemporary world through a programme of fearless new writing, re-imagined classics and potent twentieth century plays.

In a Quebec Innu community, Mikuan (Sharon Fontaine-Ishpatao) and Shaniss (Yamie Grégoire) struggle to maintain their close friendship when they clash over their diverging ambitions. When Mikuan falls in love with a white boy and starts to consider a life beyond their tiny reserve, her bond with Shaniss and her family is put to the test. A coming-of-age story told with humour, tenderness, and heartbreak, Kuessipan is a poignant exploration of evolving friendship and dreams, and the bonds that will forever root us in our culture. Tim Burton’s CORPSE BRIDE
Oct 30 @ 7:30 pm

Come in costume for a Spooky Photo Shoot and Treats!!!

Returning to the painstaking stop-motion animation he employed with amazing success in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton presents a hair-raising legend based on a 19th-century Russian folktale, in which a young man mistakenly weds a corpse while on a two-day trek to the village of his real bride-to-be. It is up to the groom’s flesh-and-blood fiancée, who has been pining for the arrival of her intended, to face her wraith-like rival and make peace with her by promising to live her dreams for her and by vowing to remember her always. Only then are the living bride and groom free to proceed with their own wedding ceremony in the warmhearted fable Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.

FLEABAG - National Theatre

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life.

The hilarious, award-winning, one-woman show that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag, was captured live on stage from London’s West End in 2019.

Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

Presented by DryWrite, Soho Theatre and Annapurna Theatre.

AMMONITE
Nov 20 @ 7:30 pm
Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan star in this raw love story between a solitary paleontologist and a wealthy, grieving wife in 19th-century Dorset.

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan have both shown exceptional range, depth, and intensity on screen, but Ammonite reveals new colours. In this story of a visionary scientist and the young woman who changes her life, these two stars deliver performances of raw electricity.

Mary Anning (Winslet) devotes her days on Southwest England’s Dorset coast to finding and cataloguing fossils of ammonites, extinct and beautiful sea creatures. In the early 19th century this is no work for a woman, and no scientific society will have her. So Mary toils alone, even as male scientists visit to study and take credit for her work. When one visitor brings along his grieving wife, Charlotte (Ronan), then abandons her there to return to London, the two women have no one to turn to but each other.

Francis Lee’s follow-up to his award-winning God’s Own Country shows the same talent for powerful love stories in harsh environments. The rocky, windswept seaside of Lyme Regis is palpable here. Lee directs with a similar brisk urgency, cutting to the core of Mary’s anger and Charlotte’s pain, charting the gathering emotional storm that throws them together. As in God’s Own Country, Lee films physical passion without a shred of prudishness. He, Winslet, and Ronan forego period gloss for a portrait of desire that feels so much more true. And in showing the full gamut of Mary’s astringent brilliance and unvarnished lust, Winslet delivers one of the very best performances of her career.  –  CAMERON BAILEY
