Special Events Report 2018 AGM
For the follow-up to his Oscar-winning hit and Film Circuit favourite Moonlight, Barry Jenkins returns with this moving period piece about a pregnant woman fighting to prove her fiancé’s innocence after he is wrongfully jailed for rape. Based on James Baldwin’s 1974 novel of the same name, If Beale Street Could Talk marks the first English-language film adaptation of the legendary US writer and activist’s work.
Set in the early 1970s in the predominantly Latin American community of East Harlem, the film follows Tish (Kiki Layne), a 19-year-old woman who falls in love with Fonny (Stephan James), a young sculptor. Their brief idyll is broken when Fonny is suddenly arrested, placed in a police lineup—in which he is the only Black man—and framed for the rape of a local woman. Tish, who has just discovered she is pregnant, and her family must fight to prove Fonny’s innocence. With this thought-provoking and still-timely story, Jenkins manages to preserve both the politics and the romantic spirit of Baldwin’s celebration of the power of love and hope in times of despair.
One of the most highly anticipated films of the year, If Beale Street Could Talk reunites writer-director Jenkins with Moonlight’s powerhouse production team for a stunning and honest story of an American couple determined to fight for love, freedom and justice in their own society.
- Directed by Barry Jenkins

“Jenkins captures the humor, verve, and considerable complexity of the prose.” – The Playlist
“In some ways Beale feels less like a movie than a well-staged, meticulously shot play; a period piece that floats beyond its specific time and place and into the realm of allegory.” – Entertainment Weekly
“It’s a film with love at its root, both familial and romantic, and Jenkins fills so much of it with a radiating warmth.” –The Guardian

We are delighted to welcome YOUNG COMPANY PRODUCTIONS back to the King’s Theatre stage with an original production of Lewis Carroll’s classic story, ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.
“Curiouser and curiouser”. And so begins Alice’s journey into Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland of entertaining encounters with a veritable host of bizarre creatures from a Dodo, Mock Turtle, dancing lobsters, and of course the White Rabbit and the March Hare. Young Company Productions is delighted to be back with a fresh and original adaptation of this well-loved and classic tale.
YCP has already brought forth the thought provoking and challenging ‘Mind-Shift’ presentation last spring, and on Canada Day the troupe had wowed audiences with their evocative production of ‘Shakespeare by The Shore’ at the Oqwa’titek Amphitheatre. Now they’re back and bigger than ever, rising to the challenge of bringing to life “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, this time on the main stage of Annapolis Royal’s King’s Theatre for three performances March 29, 30, and 31st.
Co-directors Linda Hulme-Leahy and Simon Bonnington are thrilled to be working with the cast of 29 keen and eager young thespians. And with their new adaptation, taken straight from Carroll‘s original text, they have free reign to craft the production for our local stage.
We very much hope you’ll enjoy the show. And if you don’t? “Off with their heads!”

Eric Harper’s live show is a spectacle. Bending his hilarious and heart-felt story-telling with his mad, virtuosic Flamenco/Fado guitar skills and soulful voice, you are guaranteed to laugh, cry and dance in your seat.
Eric is an multi-award winning musician who creates a style that is not only all his own, but his music is melodically entrancing, virtuosically ferocious and harmonically soul-stirring to the core.
Hatched from a small “po-dunk” town in Arkansas, tempered by the hard-worn guitarists of Portugal, inspired by the fantastical Flamenco from Gypsies in Spain, modernized by the transformative education of Berklee College of Music in Boston and currently camping out amongst the Canucks in Canada, Eric brings a fusion of music never experienced before by a “redneck”.
Eric released his first solo album in 2008 entitled “Romper a Madrugada” which was played in countries all over the world from Portugal to Brazil, the Azores and Madeira island, Canada and the States. After that he release his self-titled CD “Eric Harper”, in 2010, garnering the attention of people like Rainn Wilson from The Office and Grammy-Award Winning Producer KC Porter.
In 2013 he released his instrumental CD entitled “Ribeira” showcasing his virtuosic guitar skills. Since 2000 Eric has won multiple awards not only for his guitar skills but also for his Film Scoring talents. He has had music placed on over 600 TV shows to date and has scored several movies. He has performed all around the globe from Portugal to China, Canada to Mexico, Switzerland to Israel, France to Spain and many more countries.
