“Highly engaging & superb musicianship”

Fresh from their debut at Carnegie Hall, they were just featured on WQXR.
First Prize winner of the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Rolston String Quartet is storming onto the international classical music scene. As the Calgary Herald notes, the ensemble “chimed the most resonantly with the ideals of perfect quartet playing.” Having formed in 2013, they were the only ensemble to be featured on CBC’s 2016 list of hot Canadian classical musicians under 30. The quartet also won First Prize at the 31st Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, Third Prize at the inaugural M-Prize Competition, and the Durosoir Prize at the 2016 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition. Their Performances have taken them throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and they currently serve as Graduate Quartet-in-Residence at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

The Rolston String Quartet – Luri Lee (violin), Hezekiah Leung (viola), Jonathan Lo (cello), and new member as of spring 2018 Emily Kruspe (violin) – was formed in the summer of 2013 at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s Chamber Music Residency. They take their name from Canadian violinist Thomas Rolston, founder and long-time director of the Music and Sound Programs at the Banff Centre.

Luri Lee plays a Carlo Tononi violin, generously on loan from Shauna Rolston Shaw. Rolston String Quartet is endorsed by Jargar Strings of Denmark.

ERIC HARPER
Apr 7 @ 7:30 pm

Eric Harper’s live show is a spectacle. Bending his hilarious and heart-felt story-telling with his mad, virtuosic Flamenco/Fado guitar skills and soulful voice, you are guaranteed to laugh, cry and dance in your seat.

Eric is an multi-award winning musician who creates a style that is not only all his own, but his music is melodically entrancing, virtuosically ferocious and harmonically soul-stirring to the core.

Hatched from a small “po-dunk” town in Arkansas, tempered by the hard-worn guitarists of Portugal, inspired by the fantastical Flamenco from Gypsies in Spain, modernized by the transformative education of Berklee College of Music in Boston and currently camping out amongst the Canucks in Canada, Eric brings a fusion of music never experienced before by a “redneck”.

Eric released his first solo album in 2008 entitled “Romper a Madrugada” which was played in countries all over the world from Portugal to Brazil, the Azores and Madeira island, Canada and the States. After that he release his self-titled CD “Eric Harper”, in 2010, garnering the attention of people like Rainn Wilson from The Office and Grammy-Award Winning Producer KC Porter.

In 2013 he released his instrumental CD entitled “Ribeira” showcasing his virtuosic guitar skills. Since 2000 Eric has won multiple awards not only for his guitar skills but also for his Film Scoring talents. He has had music placed on over 600 TV shows to date and has scored several movies.  He has performed all around the globe from Portugal to China, Canada to Mexico, Switzerland to Israel, France to Spain and many more countries.

CATHERINE MACLELLAN’s Tribute to Gene MacLellan
Apr 13 @ 7:30 pm

Juno-Award winner Catherine MacLellan, one of Canada’s finest and favourite singer-songwriters, brings her theatrical show If It’s Alright With You to King’s Theatre on Satruday April 13 at 7:30pm.

The show celebrates the legacy of her late father Gene MacLellan, one of the country’s most famous songwriters. Nearly 50 years ago wrote the world-wide, multi-million selling smash hits “Snowbird” and “Put Your Hand in the Hand”. From his Prince Edward Island home he penned songs that Anne Murray, Elvis Presley, Loretta Lynn, Chet Atkins, Joan Baez and Ocean turned into worldwide chart-toppers and repertoire standards. These songs propelled him to fame , and remain the gold standard for Canadian songwriting.

Catherine MacLellan’s show If It’s Alright With You is filled with stories from her father’s life, from surprising revelations to intimate descriptions of their time together. It will feature the familiar hits, as well as lesser-known and even unreleased songs she’s discovered in her family archives. “I want to share my dad’s music and it’s also an opportunity for me to get to know him better. The more I get to know his songs, the closer I feel to him” she said.

Catherine’s father died while she was still in her mid-teens in 1995. “I think really for me it was part of my journey of healing. Now that my daughter is eleven, and I’m starting to see my brother’s kids playing music and they’re even playing some of dad’s songs, I see the generational thing is really cool. I’m really proud to be walking in his footsteps. He would be happy to know that his songs continue on, being remembered and given a new spark,“ she said. “A young, regular guy, from a regular upbringing, very humble beginnings, what one guy can do.”

With her grace and charm, Catherine has captivated audiences since her 2004 solo debut. She’s capable of the deepest emotional connections through her intimate lyrics as well as easy-going and light-hearted fun.

LEAHY
Apr 16 @ 7:30 pm

https://i2.wp.com/www.aimbookingagency.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Leahy_3_2019_PHOTO-CREDIT-Clem-McIntosh.jpg?fit=1024%2C663&ssl=1Over the course of their notable career, Canadian group Leahy has secured a place as one of the country’s most highly regarded progressive folk-roots bands.  Their emergence on the Canadian music scene in the late 1990’s with their chart-topping instrumental single “Call to Dance”, introduced audiences to a new way of accessing a uniquely Canadian music genre.  The “Leahy sound” – a combination of strong stride piano, unique bass guitar and drumming styles along with driving rhythm guitar – was the foundation from which wildly talented fiddle led instrumentals and vocals were launched to mainstream music listeners.  Leahy would go on to win three Juno awards and receive countless accolades for their dynamic and powerful performances.

To date Leahy has sold more than half a million albums worldwide. They have been featured in three PBS television specials – Leahy Live in Concert, Gael Force (with the Chieftains), and Leahy Live from Gatineau, Quebec – and are the subject of an Academy Award winning documentary, The Leahys: Music Most of All.  As well as touring extensively throughout Canada, the USA and Europe in support of three acclaimed records – Leahy, Lakefield, and In All Things – the band had the enviable opportunity of opening for fellow Canadian, Shania Twain, throughout the USA, Canada and the UK on her record-breaking Come On Over tour.

Since early 2017 Leahy has been back in the studio recording new music.  The focus is on songs and the band’s original songwriting and instrumental compositions.  The result is a wide-ranging collection that reflects the individual personalities that make up Leahy.  Built on their roots and the distinctive “Leahy sound”, their new material reveals the band’s drive to continue pushing beyond its traditional footings.  It’s a powerful record that delivers a sumptuous feast of solid music, pulse-raising rhythms, compelling storytelling and infectious melodies.

On the edge of a new chapter in their career, some things don’t change – the experience.  An encounter with Leahy is inimitable. Performances are full of energy, big rich sound, poignant songs, fiery instrumentals and percussive step-dancing – all delivered with unapologetic passion! In one word – unforgettable.

The line up is….
Erin – piano, fiddle, vocals, step-dancing
Frank – drums, fiddle
Maria – guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals, step-dancing
Siobheann – bass, vocals, fiddle, step-dancing
Julie – piano, vocals, keyboards
Denise – vocals, guitar, piano, step-dancing
