LYNNEA ROSE & THE MODERN GRASS
Nov 3 @ 7:30 pm

LYNNEA ROSE is charming her way into the hearts of folk, Celtic and country fans alike. Since the release of her debut album “Lynnea Rose” in 2013, she has graced audiences all across Canada, sharing with them her beautiful voice, heartfelt songwriting and genuine stage presence. Born and raised in Granville Beach,  Nova Scotia as an eighth generation Armstrong,  it’s easy to hear where her musical inspirations lie. Her deep connection to her Celtic heritage and East Coast is clearly evident in songs like “Fundy Shore”,  “Where I am From” and “Bad Winter”. Stylistically, Lynnea Rose has been compared to Alison Krauss and The Rankins, with her song-writing remeniscent of  Sarah Harmer and Gillian Welch.

In 2015, Lynnea Rose teamed up with award winning producers Tom Terrell (Modern Grass) and Karl Falkenham (CBC) to record her sophomore album “Rocking Chair”, which received a 2017 Music Nova Scotia Award nomination for “Americana Recording of the Year”. In June 2018,  Lynnea released a music video for “Bad Winter” which inspired an official line dance created by Trans World Dance. Both the official music video and instructional video for the line dance can be found on YouTube.
Recently returning from her very first Home Routes Tour, a series of 11 house concerts across Northern Alberta and British Columbia, Lynnea Rose is pleased to be performing back in her home town along side the incredibly talented blue grass supergroup “The Modern Grass”.

Nearly 4 years after the release of ‘City Ghosts’, THE MODERN GRASS are back on the scene with their fourth studio album, ‘Payday’. Produced by award winning duo Tom Terrell and Karl Falkenham, Payday is an homage to the simplicity and modesty of traditional music and living, Modern Grass style. This colorful and polarized collection of original and traditional songs taps into the rich vein of North American roots music, songwriting and musicianship. Payday features a special cast of guest musicians, curated not only for their sounds but for their critical places in the lineage of roots music.

Payday, as per usual for the MG, is paradoxical. Featuring Terrell’s clever and down home songwriting as well as unique renditions and twisted interpretations of folk, country, gospel, blues and old time classics. While the genre seemingly remains in flux, the MG paints a coherent, vibrant picture that is everything we’ve come to expect from the grass, and more. The latest incarnation of the Modern Grass features original members Tom Terrell, Andrew Sneddon & Adam Pye and debuts the fine banjo picking of Nova Scotia native, Ryan Dillman. With musical guests Brittany Haas, Joe Walsh, John Reischman, Donald Maclennan & Ray Legere.

Accolades
  • 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards Producer of the Year (Tom Terrell & Karl Falkenham for City Ghosts)
  • 2014 Music Nova Scotia Bluegrass/Americana Album of the Year – City Ghosts
  • 2012 Music Nova Scotia Roots/Traditional Album of the Year – High on the Mountain
  • 2012 Music Nova Scotia Bluegrass/Country Album of the year – High on the Mountain

WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOUR?
Nov 9 @ 7:30 pm

An exploration of the life, lessons, and legacy of iconic children’s television host, Fred Rogers. The sleeper hit of the season is a likely documentary Oscar contender and has been called one of the best documentaries ever made.

One movie you want to experience in a theater full of strangers is “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, Morgan Neville’s documentary about the late, great PBS children’s show host Fred Rogers. As people spread the word, this Focus Features movie about the benevolent piano-playing puppeteer host of “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood” (1968-2001), a show for children about how to build a neighborhood and live together in society, follows sleeper Ruth Bader Ginsberg biodoc “RBG” as a movie that shows us what a hero looks like.

LIZZY HOYT TRIO – “Ancient Carols for a Winter’s Night”
Dec 2 @ 7:30 pm

A CELTIC CHRISTMAS

From Winnipeg, Lizzy Hoyt is an award-winning songwriter who delivers music with soaring melodies that are rooted in Celtic and folk traditions. Not only does she have a gorgeous voice, but she’s a master of the fiddle, guitar, and harp… and she step dances too!  Her Christmas concert of ancient carols brings a Celtic flavour to the season.

Lizzy Hoyt is one of Canada’s most powerful Celtic-folk artists. Known for bringing Canadian history to life with  music, her songs like “Vimy Ridge”, “White Feather”, and “New Lady on the Prairie” have garnered awards and nominations while also connecting strongly with audiences across the country. In 2013, Lizzy was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada for her outstanding contribution to commemorating Canadian veterans and history through music.

A talented multi-instrumentalist, Lizzy toured for ten years as a side musician before pursuing her own projects. She has been praised for her mastery of the fiddle, guitar and harp by the Edmonton Journal, Calgary Herald, Penguin Eggs, Bluegrass Unlimited, Star News, and more. CBC’s Chris Della Torre calls her “a musician’s musician” and notes “fans that want their artists to play well can find that with [her]”. In addition to this praise, her voice has been described as “otherworldly”, “angelic”, “sweet”, and “pure” and as a singer, she has been recognized for her clarity and precision.

Lizzy is a full-time musician who travels and tours throughout Canada during the year with her trio. She has performed at renowned folk festivals (Edmonton Folk Festival, Montreal Folk Festival, Goderich Celtic Roots Festivals), folk clubs (Calgary Folk Club, Nickelodeon Folk Club, Northern Lights Folk Club) and through performing arts networks across the country. Throughout her career, she has released four independent albums and two music videos.

Coco Love Alcorn has always followed her spirit, but never so literally as with her latest album, Wonderland. The songs spring from her personal journey, but true to her nature, Coco offers a universal interpretation that invites all listeners to jump in and sing along.During a 5 year break from heavy touring to raise her daughter Ellie, Coco began working on a new album. She wanted to explore songwriting from a new perspective. Coco was curious to see what would happen if she put down her guitar and wrote with just her voice. She began a journey of layering vocals and rhythms on a 5 track looper. In the fall of 2014 she released a video of herself performing one of these first looper layered songs, ‘The River’.

Everything I’ve ever done has led me to here. To Wonderland, a collection of songs that are an invitation to connect, an invitation to sing, and an invitation to myself to dig deeper than ever before.”  ~ Coco Love Alcorn

“Coco is the ultimate musical spark plug… an electrical connector through which the creative energy flows. In my 30 years of touring around the world, I have never seen another performer able to bring people together like Coco does.” – James Keelaghan – Artist Director, Summerfolk and renowned Canadian singer/ songwriter

She began a journey of layering vocals and rhythms on a 5 track looper. In the fall of 2014 she released a video of herself performing one of these first looper layered songs, ‘The River’.Something amazing and unexpected happened, the video started to spread across the internet and into the world of community choirs. These choirs started to learn Coco’s looper arrangement and perform The River in their own concerts. Coco has always loved group singing and encouraging anyone who wants to sing to do so, but this grassroots spread of ‘The River’ was a complete surprise. To date there are about 20 choirs singing ‘The River’ across Canada, the States and even in the UK.As this was happening, Coco was continuing to write and record the songs for this album. She also continued sharing songs online, performing them live and in turn let the listeners shape what this album became. As her new music was inspiring choirs to sing her songs, these choirs in turn were inspiring Coco. And as Coco traveled across Canada performing between recording and home time, these new songs became infused with the spirit of connection. Without choirs grabbing a hold of The River, and fans already connecting so deeply with her new material, this would have been a completely different album.Just like her career – which has spanned over 20 years, 10 albums, cross-canada tours, collaborations, festival appearances, award nominations and notable success in TV and film licensing – creating this album has been a journey. And it took someone with a spirit like Coco’s to navigate this path.”Throughout my career I have explored across many genres, collaborations and projects, taking a windy path to get to here. But I have loved every step of my journey and trusted my inner curiosity to take me where it wanted to go. I always thought my end game was to invent a new genre or create a brand new sound, to somehow mash it all elegantly together.Everything I’ve ever done has led me to here. To Wonderland, a collection of songs that are an invitation to connect, an invitation to sing, and an invitation to myself to dig deeper than ever before.”  ~ Coco Love Alcorn
