7:30-9:00 pm WE STORY THE LAND Film & Discussion at King’s Theatre

This half hour film by Martha Stiegman and Sherry Pictou follows seven paddlers from L’sitkuk First Nation in Bear River as they travel through the land, to reconnect with a part of their history and a part of themselves. The Bear River reserve boundary cuts the people of L’sitkuk off from their ancestors’ hunting and fishing grounds. But there are old canoe routes that leave from the reserve, and cross the territory; and people here are working to reclaim them.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with members of the L’sitkuk First Nation who are featured in the film.

THE EVENT IS FREE OF CHARGE.

Thank you to Adele and Bill MacDonald, who have sponsored these events in memory of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

AMAZING GRACE
Jul 9 @ 7:30 pm

AMAZING GRACE is a filmed record of the two nights, in January 1972, during which Aretha Franklin recorded the gospel performances that became the celebrated live double album “Amazing Grace.” It remains not only the best-selling gospel record of all time, but the best-selling album of Franklin’s 50-year career. She was then at the height of her stardom, with 20 albums and 11 number-one singles (“Respect,” “Chain of Fools,” “Think,” etc.) under her belt, and she wanted to do a record that honoured the formative gospel roots of her youth.

Warner Bros. hired director Sydney Pollack to film the sessions, and we see Pollack wandering around the church, directing the action and at one point holding the camera. But for technical reasons, the project wound up getting shelved. Now lovingly restored and assembled, AMAZING GRACE can stand as an essential filmed record of what is undoubtedly one of the greatest gospel performances. Franklin was not just a great singer, as one reviewer noted, she was a human chariot.

With: Aretha Franklin, the Reverend James Cleveland, C.F. Franklin, the Southern California Community Choir plus cameos of Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts

AMAZING GRACE  is two days of Baptist church condensed to 90 minutes and injected directly into your soul. – rogerebert.com

LATE NIGHT

YOURE THE BOSS: AUDIENCE CHOICE

LATE NIGHT

Directed by Nisha Ganatra
Starring EmmaThompson, Mindy Kaling, Amy Ryan, John Lithgow

After almost 30 years, a groundbreaking talk-show host suspects she may soon be losing her coveted seat on late-night television unless she manages a game-changing transformation. Legendary talk-show host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is a pioneer in her field. The only woman ever to have a long-running program on late night, she keeps her writers’ room on a short leash – and all male. But when her ratings plummet and she is accused of being a “woman who hates women,” Katherine puts gender equality on her to-do list and impulsively hires Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling), a chemical plant efficiency expert from suburban Pennsylvania, as the first and only female on her writing staff.

With rumors swirling that Katherine is being replaced by a younger, hipper male host, she demands that the writers make her funny and relevant again. A lifelong fan, Molly is determined to prove she’s not just a diversity hire, but the one person who can turn her idol’s career around. Going against everything Katherine has staked her reputation on, she urges her to make the show more contemporary, authentic and personal, a move that could make Molly’s career or send her back to the chemical plant for good.

“Watching Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling mix it up in Late Night will make you think you’ve died and gone to hilarity heaven.”

– Rolling Stone
