JEFF HENNESSY & The Sundries / HARVEY MARCOTTE – Double Bill
Aug 29 @ 7:30 pm

Join us for a double-bill with two extraordinary of the region’s finest folk-roots-country singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists. Jeff Hennessy and Harvey Marcotte will each take the stage with an incredibly talented roster of musicians, performing their own music separately, and plus a few tunes together for one rollicking show.

JEFF HENNESSY, is a singer-songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Wolfville, launched his first CD right here in Annapolis Royal some 20 years ago, and has maintained deep connections in the community. He’s performed on the King’s stage twice in the last year alone, and with this concert he’ll be joined by his band THE SUNDRIES. They’re all professional musicians who have united in their collective love of country music to create a band that not only showcases high level musicianship but also creates a sound that will get everybody moving – a high energy night of old country, new country, and “countryish” other songs. Amazing musicians and a really fun show – super cool country music!

  • Jeff Hennessy: Keyboards, Guitar, Vocals
  • Sarah Pound: Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards
  • Mike Reese: Lead Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals
  • Mike Carroll: Drums
  • Kirk Hazel: Bass

HARVEY MARCOTTE has been flat picking, finger picking guitar since he was 12 years old. Playing Bob Dylan and the likes soon took him into folk and bluegrass styles. The mandolin was his second love which brought quickly into fiddle playing. He dug deeper into his roots and studied French Canadien fiddle as well as Celtic, Ukrainian and jazz. He`s played professionally since the tender age of 15.  Performing the Acadian band Blou, he traveled to France, South America, and several Canadien festivals. He has shared the stage with Mae Moore, Susan Crowe, Jay Unger, Wilbur Hill, Rusty Trout, and more. He makes his home in Bear River.

COIG
Sep 15 @ 7:30 pm

When the creative juices are flowing, there’s no holding back the talented quartet that makes up the Celtic supergroup Còig: Fiddler Chrissy Crowley, multi-instrumentalist Darren McMullen, piano player Jason Roach and Rachel Davis on fiddle, viola, vocals.

Còig’s music is a unique combination of influences that could only come from these four players. It’s traditional for sure, but it’s performed in a lot of non-traditional ways. “We all come from sort of a traditional background, but then we have different influences that we’re interested in,” explains fiddler and singer Rachel Davis. “Jason has a jazz degree, and listens to a lot of different music. Chrissy likes to dive into a lot of world music, Darren comes from a kind of Irish theme from playing around. More of the traditional Cape Breton music is really what I love, plus all the folk songs, so it’s an interesting mix.”

That leads to the other magic ingredient in Còig. It’s a band of fast friends, people that grew up together, played together, and knew each other way before they ever considered being in a band together. The best in trad music, in a non-traditional way. That’s Còig.

Darren McMullen – guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, bouzouki, whistles, flute, vocals
Rachel Davis – fiddle, viola, vocals
Jason Roach – piano
Chrissy Crowley – fiddle

XARA CHORAL THEATRE: RINGS THROUGH WATER
Sep 21 @ 7:30 pm

Rings Through Water is new creation that uses ethereal choral singing, contemporary and traditional Indigenous dance, along with powerful text and theatrical presentation, to tell three short stories about water.

It’s a collaboration between five artists – three Indigenous and two Settlers. Their desire to overcome their own embodied prejudices, privilege, and pain is central to their artistic process and to the beautiful narratives of this show.

Depending on its form, water has the capacity to amplify sound, distort it, or mute it; how do we do the same as we navigate our relationship with this precious resource and one another? Together they speak for water, lift up the voices of its protectors, and amplify the voices of the missing and murdered  Indigenous women who have met their end in it. They also offer a reconciliation-based model for Indigenous and Settler collaboration.

Check out this great review in The Coast

They have shared the stage as support for such musical luminaries as Robert Plant, Feist, and Calexico, and have appeared as headliners for many of Canada’s major Folk Music festivals. ELAPULTIEK – a play by shalan joudry
Oct 6 @ 7:30 pm

Elapultiek (ehl-ah-bool-dee-egg) – “we are looking towards” – is a 2-person play written by Bear River (L’sitkuk) playwright shalan joudry. It marks the first time Two Planks and a Passion Theatre has commissioned a Mi’kmaq playwright from Nova Scotia to create a new work for the company. The show was a huge success as an outdoor performance last Summer. Now, Elapultiek begins its journey as a touring indoor production.

In the course of the play, two biologists (one white, one Mi’kamq) are thrown together each night to count the swifts, and in the process challenge each others’ way of seeing. It’s a beautiful piece that is funny and moving, exploring reconciliation on a personal level.

King’s Theatre debuts the stage version of this play. Because the play was designed to be performed “in the round”, King’s Theatre will be seating patrons directly on the stage.

ABOUT THE PLAY

In the time of Idle No More, a young Mi’kmaw drum singer and a Euro-Nova Scotian biologist meet at dusk each day to count a population of endangered Chimney Swifts. As the relationship deepens over time, they struggle with their differing views of the world. Each ‘count night’ reveals a deeper complexity of connection to land, history, and ecology, and of reconciliation on a personal level.

Playwright and performer shalan joudry is an oral storyteller, hand-drum singer and poet from the traditional district of Kespukwitk (southwest Nova Scotia). Following years of raising children, performing, writing, and ecology work, Shalan now lives and works in her community of Bear River First Nation, sharing messages of reconnecting to both land and culture.

Halifax actor and dramaturge Matthew Lumley co-stars.

Directed by Ken Schwartz of Two Planks and a Passion Theatre.
