JAH’MILA & HER 8-PIECE REGGAE BAND ON STAGE AT KING’S

Jah’Mila is wrapped in the very roots of the reggae family tree and stands tall with music that is lyrically creative, tastefully arranged, masterfully. delivered and positively inspiring.

Most recently Jah’Mila released a powerful new single called “Chant Their Names.” A cry for change in a system that has repeatedly failed the Black community, the lyrics beg the police to assess their ethics and policies while also imploring all of us to keep the memory of those countless victims alive by chanting their names out loud.

SINGER-SONGWRITER DAVE GUNNING RETURNS TO KING’S WITH AN INTIMATE SOLO SHOW

Dave Gunning is best defined as a master craftsman. Over the course of 23 years and 11 earlier albums, the Nova Scotian folk singer/songwriter has diligently sharpened his skills, developing into a poetic storyteller and emotionally convincing singer with few equals.

The fruits of those labours are now vividly on display in his latest collection of songs, Up Against The Sky. The relaxed and intimate feel of the record reflects its method of creation. “I focused a lot on tones and the vibe, rather than strategic parts on this one. Many of these tunes were sung and played at the same time, and that prevented me from being able to go back and edit, forcing a little more honesty.”

FODAR: Market Dances

FODAR: MARKET DANCES OUTSIDE IN THE MARKET SQUARE

FODAR moves performances outside to the iconic Annapolis Royal Farmers and Traders Market. Dancers will perform a mixed collection of solos and duets choreographed especially for the festival. Introduced for the first time last year, Market Dances drew well over a hundred very enthusiastic socially distanced and masked audience members. Due to COVID-19 spacing requirements seating is limited and should be reserved.

Home to the only major summer contemporary dance festival in Atlantic Canada, Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal (FODAR) is ranked as one of the major dance festivals in the country. Back for its seventh season, FODAR is live on stage showcasing classics of the past and current directions in live contemporary dance performed by some of this country’s finest artists. FODAR 2021 runs from August 16 through 21.  COVID-19 protocols in place.

Admission is free-of-charge. Donations for Fodar will be gratefully accepted at the event (cash only).

Tickets can be picked up at the King’s Theatre Box Office until 3pm on event day.  Any remaining tickets will be available at Market Square, before the show.

FODAR: PROGRAM ONE – LIVE ON STAGE AT KING’S THEATRE

Program 1 showcases an eclectic mix of works including Dancing in the Third Act, and international award-winning dancer Sarah Murphy in acclaimed choreographer, teacher and dance historian Carol Anderson’s powerful classic, Allegro Mysterioso (1983). Also on the Program, Dawn Shepherd and Ryan Gray of Breaking Circus perform a stunning new straps duet.

Dancing in the Third Act

FODAR brings back the production that started it all. The Company of Angels returns in Dancing in the Third Act (2013). The work runs on all four nights in both Program 1 and 2. Choreographed by Randy Glynn, this powerful and thoroughly engaging work was a hit with critics and audiences alike and toured to other Canadian dance festivals.  Working with dancers ranging in age from 65 to 80+, Glynn has created a visually dynamic full-length work that is a poignant, dramatic and whimsical look at the ups and downs (literally) of aging.

DUO CONCERTANTE

SOLACE featuring Duo Concertante

Nancy Dahn violin & Timothy Steeves piano

Musique Royale

For over twenty years, violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves have built an international career as the acclaimed Canadian chamber ensemble Duo Concertante.

Duo Concertante have produced 12 albums, recorded on the Centrediscs, ATMA and Marquis Classics labels, creating a formidable oeuvre of new works and definitive classics. Beethoven: Complete Sonatas for Violin and Pianoreceived critical praise in German, Austrian, British and Canadian media, and was described by Gramophone as “a miracle of…knowledge and poetry.”  In 2017, J.S. Bach Six Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard was named ECMA’s Classical Recording of the Year, the first of three consecutive ECMA wins in that category, followed by Incarnation (2018) and Perfect Light (2019). The just-released Franz Schubert Music for Violin and Piano (May 2020) has already gained attention from the CBC for being “heart-rending…thrilling”, and with “uncanny unity of purpose.”

In partnership with Musique Royale, we present their beautiful new program SOLACE.

It addresses our collective relationship with each other, exploring themes of reconciliation, peace, understanding, loving and communion, in counterpoint to the worldwide stress and sadness caused by the current pandemic. They have commissioned Grammy Award-nominated Dawn Avery to write a new work entitled Iotsistokwaron:ion (“The Stars” in Mohawk). Another contemporary work in the program is Jessie Montgomery’s PEACE (2020), a profoundly universal expression of the “Great Sadness of the first quarantine” when she “struggled to define what actually brings joy, making peace with sadness – a necessary dynamic to the human experience.” Finally is the canonic sonata by César Franck Sonata, a musical journey chronicling an intimate partnership in stages – from the initial infatuation, through intense passion, crisis and conflict, to a final place of acceptance and deep connection.

THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNER
