WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Youth 7-11
An adventure in imagination through creative movement, theatre games, and role-playing. This class takes you into the physical world of acting, from head to toe.  Participants will develop confidence and collaboration skills while having fun creating characters and stories all their own. Students learn how to manipulate the elements of story-making: character, plot, and setting, and also develop an awareness of working for an audience.
Participants become team-players:  learning how to negotiate, problem-solve and collaborate throughout the creative process.
Youth 12-16
Build your core performance skills through dramatic exercises, theatre games and creative movement. Learn to create compelling characters and develop scenes through improvisation and teamwork. In the process of creating theatre, we will hone our collaborative skills, sharpen our critical artistic eye, and grow in self-confidence and artistic self-expression.
Participants dive deep into character creation, physical theatre, collaboration and performance in front of an audience (their classmates).
Adults
Hone your foundational theatre skills in this workshop that takes you deep into the creative process through improvisation, physical theatre exercises, theatre games, scene work and script work. Through these exercises, we will advance our skills in performance, play devising, staging techniques, embodied characterization, and script analysis. Activities involve ensemble work, team or pair acting and solo work.
Participants will develop a critical eye, performer confidence and a deep understanding of the actor’s process.
KATHY FRANCE is an actor, director, playwright, and the founder and Artistic Director of Caravan Theatre, a professional theatre company based in Wolfville (www.caravantheatre.ca). Originally from Winnipeg, Kathy studied theatre at the University of Manitoba and worked in the local industry there. Then she married and spent many years living abroad with her husband and son in such exciting locales as Trinidad, Syria, Thailand, Nepal, Yugoslavia and Croatia. She figured “Caravan” was a good name for a company that kept uprooting and moving on. Recent Caravan productions include: Feeling Mental Health (digital performance, 2022), 4.48 Psychosis (NS tour, 2021), A Child’s Christmas in Wales (NS tours 2015, 2016) and Fem Fest (NS tour 2018). Besides staging shows, Kathy has taught theatre at The University of the West Indies (Trinidad), The Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts (Syria), and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), as well as to countless school youth and community theatre groups all over the world. She loves working with theatre enthusiasts— building skills through theatre exercises and participating in the joy of creativity.
